Visual Arts

At Bishop DuBourg our Visual Arts department allows students the opportunity to explore the many facets of art, as well as the creativity hidden within the individual student. Taken as electives, freshmen through seniors are challenged to look at the various forms of art including watercolor, ceramics, pencil, charcoal, mosaics, and collage, from different perspectives.

 

Classes include:

ART ONE – INTRO TO DESIGN Two Semesters (1 credit)
Grade Level: Freshman - Senior Elective
This course seeks to expose students to a variety of ways to make and appreciate art, including: drawing, painting, printmaking, computer design, ceramics, sculpture, and fibers. Projects are based on the elements and principles of art and design and are enhanced with the knowledge of art history. Various types of media for two-dimensional and three-dimensional art will be explored.

 

DRAWING & PAINTING Two Semesters (1 credit)
Sophomore - Senior Elective
This course will assist students in establishing a strong foundation in drawing, painting, and printmaking. Students will develop their skills, building on their knowledge of the elements and principles of art and design learned in Art I - Intro to Design. A wide variety of media and techniques will be used.


CERAMICS & SCULPTURE Two Semesters (1 credit)
Sophomore - Senior Elective
This class is an introduction to the basic principles of three-dimensional construction. The first semester will focus on the three basic hand-building techniques in ceramics: pinch, coil, and slab. Additionally, students will learn how to use the potter’s wheel. Students will learn ceramic vocabulary and history. During the second semester students will focus on the basic principles of construction in sculpture. Students will learn the safe and proper way to use basic tools. Students will learn sculpture vocabulary and the various ways to finish the surface of a sculpture.

ADVANCED DRAWING & PAINTING Two Semesters (1 credit)
Junior - Senior Elective
This course will allow students to refine the skills they learned in DRAWING AND PAINTING. Students will be challenged artistically to explore themes in their artwork and solve problems of composition. Students will be given more independence in their artwork. A wide variety of media and techniques will be used. Strong self-motivation is essential in this class.

ADVANCED CERAMICS & SCULPTURE Two Semesters (1 credit)
Junior - Senior Elective
This class focuses on advancing the basic three-dimensional building skills learned in CERAMICS AND SCULPTURE. The first semester in ceramics, students will focus on the surface treatment and construction of various hand built artworks. Additionally, students will continue practicing on the potter’s wheel to make a bowl. During the second semester students will advance their skills of construction in sculpture. Students will review the safe and proper way to use basic tools and learn how to use power tools. Strong self-motivation is essential in this class.

ADVANCED ART STUDIO Two Semesters (1 credit)
Senior Elective
This class will further the personal approach to solving artistic problems and will continue to develop more of the students’ themes and techniques. The student will be expected to show more originality and display quality compositions using the art elements and fundamental principles in each of the assigned art projects. The assignments will include perceptual problem solving from actual objects or ideas, art history, art criticism, sketchbook usage, and art production. Strong self-motivation is essential in this class.
