DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD

Richard Niemann'64

Bishop DuBourg is proud to announce that Richard Niemann '64 is the recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award.

My story begins and ends with gratitude. Throughout my life, people have been there to support and encourage me every step of the way. It started with my parents, who paved the way for my future success, providing me with a vital education and high expectations for myself, academically and in all walks of life. During my time at Bishop DuBourg High School, my passion for athletics and basketball allowed me to play with a team of talented athletes, leading us to win the 1964 Class L State Basketball Championship. My four years at Bishop DuBourg prepared me for the next phase of my journey at Saint Louis University. I owe many thanks to Saint Louis University for providing me an excellent education and a chance to play on a national stage. We played top-ranking schools ranging from UCLA to Louisville. At the recommendation of SLU, I also had an opportunity to win gold at the World Student Games in Tokyo and to play in South America and Europe. Two teammates and I went on to professional careers in the NBA. From 1969 to 1972, I enjoyed playing professional basketball for Detroit, Milwaukee, Boston, Carolina, Miami, and Dallas. That journey ran for a 30-year-plus stint with the Kutis Amateur Team, which later led to being inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. My real career began utilizing my degree in chemistry, which I obtained from Saint Louis University in 1968. I served some 32 years in the science classrooms of Mary Institute, Francis Howell, and Brentwood.

Teaching alongside fellow teachers and principals filled these years with beautiful memories. All of these successes could not have been possible without the unwavering support of my fantastic wife, Juli. She has been my biggest cheerleader and loving voice for nearly 50 years. Her rock-solid support allowed me the freedom to explore many new challenges. We have a married daughter, Christina, who has followed in my footsteps as a Chemistry teacher in Denver, Colorado. My brother, Paul, is a priest in the St. Louis Archdiocese, now serving at Annunciation and Our Lady Of Providence parishes here in St. Louis. Living a retirement life with my family by my side is the sweetest part of the journey.

Congratulations Richard!
