BRING YOUR OWN CHROMEBOOK

BYOC allows students to bring their personal Chromebook from home to be used for
educational applications in the classroom.

Repairs for your school purchased Chromebooks will still be handled by the school. If there is
breakage that HP will not cover or the chromebook is lost then the students and parents will
start using this new policy.

Students will use their devices to access resources, complete assignments, research
information, access websites with curriculum-related content, collaborate in real time,
produce documents, analyze data, participate in surveys, produce videos, read digital books,
create blogs, take notes, and other approved instructional activities.

We recommend that students purchase a device that can maximize their learning
opportunities. Only Chromebooks that are currently supported by Google and the
manufacturer may be used. Chromebooks must meet the minimum requirements listed.
Please see pages 4-5.

Students should only bring a personal Chromebook for use in class. Chromebooks are not to
be used in locations where there is an expectation of privacy areas, such as: locker rooms,
bathrooms, etc. Students will be limited to having a maximum of one (1) Chromebook
enrolled for use in the BYOC Program.

Chromebooks are the sole responsibility of the student and parent/guardian. BDHS accepts no
responsibility for either the security of, or the data residing on, the Chromebook. School
employees will not support, repair or troubleshoot personal student Chromebooks.

The student will put the Chromebook away and take it home at the end of the school day,
where the student and parent can troubleshoot the Chromebook. Parents are encouraged
to purchase insurance or an extended warranty for the Chromebook.

It is the responsibility of the family to replace the Chromebook within one week. The school will
give a loaner out for that week. The school does have a limited amount of Chromebooks to sell
for $550.

It is recommended that personally owned Chromebooks come to school with a full charge.
Students should be made aware that the school is not responsible to provide an opportunity
or the necessary power to charge their Chromebook during the school day. It is highly
recommended that your Chromebook has a usb-c charger. The school has a limited number
of external usb-c chargers a student could use. Excessive usage will lead to a fine.

As long as the Chromebook is supported by Google and enrolled in BDHS’s Chrome OS
management system, students will have identical access to all educational apps and software
that Chromebooks purchased through school have.

BDHS participates in the Federal FCC E-rate program and receives funding; therefore, it is
mandated that the School be compliant with the federal Children's Internet Protection Act
(CIPA) and the Protecting Children in the 21 st Century Act. These federal Acts require the school
to have active and technical measures in place to monitor and filter inappropriate internet
content.

Cellular data plans on personal devices do not use BDHS’s internet connection and
therefore do not use BDHS internet content filter. Students should only use the BDHS
network connection with their Chromebook while on BDHS property.

To ensure the safety of our students and network, the school has implemented Google’s
Chrome OS management system to manage student’s Chromebooks. This allows the School to
monitor and track student Chromebooks, ensuring our students’ safety. It also allows required
web content filtering and ensuring students have direct access to educational apps.

Yes, enrollment in the School’s Chrome OS Management System is required and is performed by
an Information Technology (IT) technician at Bishop DuBourg High School. This is required for
continued use of BDHS resources on a Chromebook. It can be removed at the parent’s request
but will prevent the student from connecting to the school network. Only BDHS Google accounts can sign in on a Chromebook managed by BDHS. Therefore, the same controls for monitoring students at school will be utilized at home. The
The school will be able to monitor all web content used on the student’s Chromebook. Therefore, we
strongly recommend that the Chromebook enrolled in the Chrome OS management system be
utilized only for educational purposes.

Yes, Students will have access to printing on-campus with approval from their teacher, if the
Chrome OS Management System has been installed on your student’s Chromebook.

The IT Department will assess the Chromebook to ensure it is an approved and supported
Chromebook. On specific days the IT Department will enroll the Chromebook at Bishop DuBourg.

The Chromebook will be unenrolled from BDHS’s OS management system once the student has
officially left the school. Instructions will be given at that time. The Chromebook will remain on
the school network during the school and summer months.

NOTE: Unenrollment is permanent and will prevent your student from accessing BDHS
resources on that Chromebook. Re-enrollment using the same Chromebook may be subject
to a re-enrollment fee.
